Streamlined Assessment
The Tejas LEE was developed to maximize the acquisition of information about student's skill development while at the same time, minimizing the time required for gathering this information. Branching rules allow teachers to skip sections of the assessment that the student is highly unlikely to have the skills to complete based on performance on lower level tasks. At each grade level, tasks within a skill domain (Phonological Awareness, Graphophonemic Knowledge, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension) increase in difficulty over the course of the year. Branching rule flow charts are available for each grade level in the Administration Guide. The basic logic of the branching rules is presented below.
Kindergarten
All students are required to complete the letter naming, letter sound identification, rhyming, blending syllables into words, segmenting words into syllables, and listening comprehension sections. Students are not asked to complete phoneme manipulation, simple decoding, or simple reading sections until they have developed some syllable manipulation skills. Simple reading is not required until the end of the year. If a student scores "Desarrollado (Developed)" on a Phonological Awareness or Graphophonemic Knowledge skill before the end of the year, the section does not need to be re-administered.
First Grade
All students are required to complete the initial and final phoneme identification, blending phonemes into words, segmenting words into phonemes, simple decoding, and simple reading sections. Students are not asked to complete phoneme omission tasks unless they have some blending and segmenting phoneme skills. Spelling is not required until the middle of the year. If a student scores "Desarrollado (Developed)" on a Phonological Awareness or Graphophonemic Knowledge skill before the end of the year, the section does not need to be re-administered.
Second Grade
There are no branching rules at this grade level. All students are required to complete the decoding, reading comprehension, and spelling sections at each time point.
Third Grade
There are no branching rules at this grade level. All students are required to complete the reading comprehension and spelling sections at each time point.
